La clemenza di Tito – Mozart

Scottish opera performs the opera in a lucid and singable English translation by Amanda Holden, which renders the drama of this supposedly moribund opera seria more vivid than in any production I can remember.

Every word of Amanda Holden’s excellent translation could be heard…
Opera

This translation was commissioned by Scottish Opera for Stephen Wadsworth’s production which started out at the Edinburgh Festival in 1991 – it was subsequently revived in the US with Lorraine Hunt as Sesto. Nicholas McGegan conducted.

Other productions include:
David McVicar’s acclaimed production for ENO in 2005 with Paul Nilon as Tito, Sarah Connolly as Sesto and Emma Bell as Vitellia; Roland Boer conducted. At its first revival, Alice Coote played Sesto and Edward Gardner conducted.

Rondo – Non più di fiori
VITELLIA
Garlands of flowers,
withered and perished;
hopes I had cherished,
selfish and proud.
Chains cruelly binding me,
dread visions haunt me;
death comes to taunt me
wearing my shroud.
