This is not a full translation but an English narration – to replace the original German dialogue – for use in concert performance.

The narration was commissioned from AH by Sir Colin Davis for his performances with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in May 1993. At these performances the narration was declaimed from the stage by Werner Klemperer.

When AH submitted the text a request came back from the NYPO to change The Wolf’s Glen to The Wolf’s Gulch. Their request – despite ‘gulch’ being an old English word for  ravine – was refused by Sir Colin….
