Così fan tutte – Mozart

‘Transliterated as ‘Women are Human’ in this wonderfully witty and idiomatic translation by Amanda Holden…’
Classical Source

Amanda had always wanted to complete da Ponte’s trilogy of  librettos for Mozart operas having already translated Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro. She had begun to make preliminary scketches but it was not until Longborough Festival Opera approached her that she was able to realise her ambition: “…i [Amanda esched the use of upper case in emails (except titles of works)] only have a sketched translation of Così, begun ages ago and never completed (never commissioned)… i would love a chance to finish Così at long last.”. She completed it for their 2021 production.

Aria – Come scoglio…

FIORDILIGI

Like a mountain that stands for ever,
proudly steadfast in violent weather;
so my heart remains undaunted,
ever constant, resolved and strong.

As the flame I carry within me
burns with joy and dedication;
so a single thought consoles me,
only death can break our bond, only dying…

Like a mountain that stands for ever,
proudly steadfast in violent weather;
so my heart remains undaunted,
ever constant, resolved and strong.

Don’t you dare to disrespect it,
this, our promise of devotion;
your attention is unwelcome
leave at once and get you gone.
